How a Pressure Switch Works
This part plays a critical duty as your furnace prepares to warm your space.
Here’s what happens after your thermostat’s call for heat:
- Your furnace’s control board commences running the draft inducer blower motor. This exhausts combustion gases from the heat exchanger and moves in new gas and air so the burners can fire.
- When the pressure switch senses that plenty of air is being pulled into the burners, it closes and signals the control board to ignite the furnace.
- Your furnace ignites and provides heat.
What Happens When a Pressure Switch Fails
When your pressure switch isn’t operating the way it should, you’ll likely hear the fan start and the switch clicking a couple times before the furnace switches off completely. When a part isn’t performing right, your furnace will turn off to protect you.
Your furnace will let you know something is incorrect with a red flash from its indicator light, which it uses to display error codes. It uses this red light to flash code, like Morse code.
You may notice short flashes or an alternating slow flash as it passes on a fault code.
